1.1. How to create a VHS-effect?

1.1.1. Assets

You can skip these first steps by simply draggin the VHS Effect from the asset folder on the clip. If this is the case skip to 1.1.5

1.1.2. Step 1: Add lumetri color

Basic Settings:

  • White: -50

Creative:

  • Faded Film: +30

  • Sharpen: -70

  • Vibrance: -30

  • Shadow Tint: drag it slightly pink

Curves:

white:

400

green:

400

blue:

400

Vignette:

  • Amount: -1

1.1.3. Add Channel Blurs

You have to add multiple blurs to the same layer. To create an old look. But everything is explained step by step.

Go to Effects>Blur&Sharpen>Channel Blur

Effect Settings 1:

  • Red Blurriness: +22

  • Edge Behavior: true

  • Blur Dimensions: vertical

Drag another Channel Blur to the layer:

Effect Settings 2:

  • Red Blurriness: +14

  • Blue Blurriness: +30

  • Edge Behavior: true

  • Blur Dimensions: horizontal

1.1.4. Add Unsharp Mask to create a more blurred look

Go to Effects>Blur&Sharpen>Unsharp Mask

Effect Settings:

  • Amount: +100

  • Radius: +12

1.1.5. Add 4x3 Aspect Ratio layer from assets

Drag the 4x3 Aspect Ratio.png image above all layers.

1.1.6. Add grain video from assets

Drag the VHS Grain.mp4 video underneath the aspect-ratio layer. And set the blending mode to OVERLAY.

1.1.7. Add a static noise layer

Drag the Static Video Accent.mp4 video underneath the grain layer. Set the blending mode to SCREEN.

1.1.8. Add a shake effect

Create an adjustment layer and name it VHS Shake

  • Add the efffect Effects>Distort>Transform to the layer

  • Hold alt/option while pressing on postition to create a expression field

  • type in wiggle(a, b) and choose a value that fits best for you
